Green olives are famous for being the garnish of traditional Martinis. It is recommended to serve olives without fillings such as red pepper, onion or almonds. Olives are served skewered on a pick and placed in the drink. Use black olives only when drink specifically calls to use it.

It is a common term for a decoration made with olives or onion in dirty martinis and cosmopolitans. Olive fruits play an essential role as the garnish in martinis, but also as the olive brine that is added to dirty martinis. Why olives are so important in martinis is due to the special flavor that is imparted by the fruit. Martini aficionados claim that the olives in their drink gives it an extra kick of flavor - the saltiness and tang of olives go excellently well with the vermouth and gin in the drink. There is a traditional way that martini drinkers consume their olives as they enjoy their martini. There are traditionally three olives in a martini. The first olive is eaten after the first sip, and the second midway through the drink, while the last is saved until after the drink is finished. The last olive soaks up some of the flavors of the vermouth and gin. It can also be applied for maraschino cherries, berries or small vegetables skewed on toothpick or stirrer.
